Our communities are thriving. They are thriving so much that we are building more energy generation facilities to serve this growing need. The growth OPPD is seeing across all customer classes is at a level not seen in nearly 50 years. That’s transformational change and we’re meeting the challenge.

Electricity is essential to the economic growth in the region and we’re committed to providing this energy for decades to come. As a result, we are nearly doubling our generation capacity over the next 10 years. That means more electricity for more customers and more electricity for growing industries and businesses.

Serving our communities in a financially responsible way is part of what it means to be a public power utility. In 2025, we are bringing two new natural gas plants online to serve this growth. Learn more about Standing Bear Lake and Turtle Creek stations below and join the conversation. Your utility serving your needs – now and into the future.

Natural Gas Solutions

OPPD's new natural gas facilities provide greater operating flexibility and enable OPPD to further integrate renewable energy into our portfolio, while maintaining affordability, reliability and resiliency.

The new facilities will be used to balance the energy load. The plants will run only as needed (estimated at less than 15% of the time) and will be available to support planned (maintenance) and unplanned (storms) outages, as well as be available to support regional power needs as directed by the Southwest Power Pool. Adding natural gas generation will help OPPD meet the growing energy needs of our service territory and support resiliency. That means OPPD can continue providing energy to our customers even in an unpredictable future.

  • Resource planning is an ongoing process at OPPD. However, every five years OPPD prepares, files, and publishes an Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) with the Western Area Power Administration (WAPA) as a result of OPPD’s long-term contract to receive hydroelectric power from WAPA. An IRP is a legal requirement that outlines a utility's generation changes to meet customer demands over time.

OPPD's Integrated Systems Planning (ISP) process will help drive the IRP, which will be complete in February 2027. If you are interested in participating in this process, please fill out the survey below to receive detailed information as it becomes available.
