Thank you for the feedback and customer input received so far on the North Omaha Station Extension. We are committed to engagement as illustrated in our August 2023 presentation.

Moving Forward

During the August 2023 Board Meeting, OPPD Board of Directors voted to approve the utility's recommended near-term generation resource plan to address unprecedented growth in energy demand. In addition to the new generation to be added, OPPD remains committed to previously announced plans for North Omaha Station, including retiring its older units (1-3) which were commissioned in the 1950s and previously converted from coal to natural gas in 2016, as well as converting units 4-5 to natural gas-only fuel. The only change recommended at that site is to potentially add battery storage resources. More details on the near term generation plans can be found here.

2022 Board Vote and Resolution

For months, OPPD and the Board have been transparent around area growth, the need for critical generating assets and reliability, as well as challenges with interconnection, supply chain and construction.

In August 2022, OPPD’s Board of Directors voted to extend current energy asset practices at North Omaha Station until the construction of Standing Bear Lake and Turtle Creek Stations are complete and OPPD has received and completed required steps from the Southwest Power Pool for their interconnection process.

This extension delays the retirement of Units 1-3 (converted to natural gas in 2016) and the conversion of two units to natural gas. This is the most prudent solution to maintain reliability and resiliency that our customer owners have come to expect from OPPD.

The Board approved a resolution, which included:

  • WHEREAS, in accordance with Powering the Future to 2050, OPPD shall engage with local educational, public health, and community-led organizations in carrying out a process that includes engaging the North Omaha community in understanding the benefits and developing action plans to reduce overall impacts related to ongoing operations at North Omaha Station for area residents.

Since the vote, OPPD has been delivering on that resolution - timeline below.

The focus has been on North Omaha in order to gain a better understanding of community needs and the data around impacts. And the work continues.

Each conversation has had a ripple effect – leading to more conversations and more insight - guiding OPPD toward broader conversations. Constructive, healthy conversation and collaboration is needed to make this work.
